Many people buy used motorcycles in order to save money while still getting an excellent bike for leisure riding or errand-running. However, it is important to ensure that any used motorcycle you’re thinking about buying is not going to turn out to be a lemon. Here’s what you need to do.

What to Bring

There are some helpful tools you can bring with you to inspect the used motorcycle that interests you. These include:

  • Your phone, to take photos and notes.
  • A screwdriver for testing the spokes of the bike.
  • A flashlight to help you see into every part of the bike.
  • Cash to cover the cost of the used bike or the deposit, depending on what the seller wants.
  • Your helmet, so you can safely try a test-ride.

Looking Over the Body

Examine the exterior of the motorcycle and take note of any dents or scrapes that seem deep or like they may impact the functionality of the bike. A really dinged-up motorcycle with rust or corrosion on it has not been cared for very well, so it’s not going to be a good buy.

Tire Check

You can tell a lot about a used motorcycle by looking at the tires. A good seller will have repaired or replaced worn tires, so they should be properly inflated to the correct psi levels. You also don’t want to see bald spots or cracks in the sidewalls. Use your screwdriver to lightly tap the spokes and listen for a clear “ping” sound, which indicates that they’re tightly adjusted. Give each wheel a spin to make sure it doesn’t wobble.
