If you’re a motorcyclist, you likely want to do everything in your power to avoid an accident or crash. While it is important for other motorists to follow the rules of the road, you can’t always depend on them to do so, and that means taking matters into your own hands. Here are some strategies to employ that will help you avoid a collision.

Be Visible

Making yourself stand out as much as possible from the road and your surroundings will help other motorists to see you better (thereby reducing the risk that they’ll swerve or run into you). Instead of wearing black motorcycle gear, wear light-colored or reflective gear. Apply reflective tape to your helmet and your bike and add more LED lights to your motorcycle so that it stands out. Always use your lights in dim or dark riding conditions.

Ride Defensively

Watch the road ahead when you’re riding your motorcycle so that you can adjust accordingly. You’ll need to watch for sudden obstacles in the road, including potholes and metal plates and deep puddles, as well as watching for animals in the road and reckless driving. Look for places you could pull out of the way if someone swerves into your lane, such as a median or shoulder.

Be Responsible

Finally, avoid riding your motorcycle when you’re sick or tired, as both of these conditions will slow your reflexes. Drinking alcohol or using recreational drugs is also inadvisable, as intoxication will make you both reckless and unable to operate your bike correctly.
